short biography icon Short Biography

Bill, after earning his B.A. in Ancient Greek and Latin from the University of Minnesota and his M.A. in Classics from Columbia University, began his teaching career in a public school in northeast Tennessee.

After a short stint in Tennessee, Bill moved on to the college prep school world, teaching Ancient Greek and Latin in Dallas, TX, and Birmingham, AL (Roll Tide!). He soon found teaching a language without speaking it to be rather stilted, so after a handful of years, Bill began to use spoken Latin and Ancient Greek in his classes.

After many years as a teacher and, eventually, head of the upper grades at his high school, Bill decided to move up to the university level. He is now teaching Classics at Samford University in Birmingham, AL, though he continues to tutor students of all ages in his free time.

An ideal vacation for him entails riding his beloved Suzuki, playing in the ocean with his family, and savoring the combination of a good wine, homemade pizza, and a P.G. Wodehouse story.

noteworthy accomplishments icon Noteworthy Accomplishments

  • When I began my teaching career twenty years ago, I discovered that the majority of my first crop of students were interested in Latin as much I had been at their age — minimally. This Latin apathy, pervasive in modern culture, is not incurable and it helps a teacher to have once lived with it! Those students grew in their appreciation for Latin and its value as a doorway into an ancient, important, and fascinating world. Repeating this experience every year is my aim and my greatest accomplishment as a teacher.
  • I have seen many students go on to earn classics degrees in college and a few of those students to eventually become Latin teachers.
  • I formally served as the president of the Alabama Classical Association and led many trips to Greece, Italy, England, and Turkey.
  • When working at a non-profit, I helped produce a Super Bowl commercial.
